Symbolic Representation

Children represent their knowledge through many languages of expression (art, drama, language, construction). Let’s first focus on art as a form of symbolic representation.

Art:
When children represent their ideas through art, they are choosing symbols to represent their understandings. These symbols might take the form of painting, 3-D sculpture, collage, relief, shadow, print-making, or drawing.

Here are a few examples:
