RSS Feeds: Adding Dynamic Content to Your Course Site

launch module

Donna Carnduff

Web Application Developer, UT Knoxville

Over the past 10 years, the Internet has become a powerful research and communication tool in education. It has changed the way faculty and students locate, manage, and use information. RSS (Real Simply Syndication) is a new Internet technology that makes it easier to filter and access the rapidly growing number of resources coming online every day. RSS feeds allow Internet users access to multiple sites without having to visit them; the content comes to you. This module will be a resource for faculty and staff to learn about RSS feeds and how to incorporate them into their online courses. The self-paced online module will consist of three parts. The first will provide a non-technical explanation of what RSS feeds are and the many ways they can be accessed. The second part will provide examples and strategies of how RSS feeds can be used to facilitate collaborative learning within the online environment. The final section will offer a tutorial on how to select, build, and add a feed to your course site.
