Scenario
Interview with a student with hearing disabilities (paraphrased)

Question:
Could you describe your experiences using a computer - either on or off of the Internet - when you could not interact with the computer because either cues or directions were provided by sound? Have you ever experienced frustration over not being able to close a dialog box because there is another one underneath, but you could not hear the warning noise that indicated that that was the situation?

Answer:
I have used the Internet for many years. I frequently cannot interact with the computer when a pop-up box that is announced by sound appears with directions, but is not visible. I don't like the pop-up ads which I cannot hear anyway. I can only see, not hear, any warnings in any dialog boxes. It would help me to have a warning announced visibly.

Question:
How often do you try to use a web site that contains audio files that might be important for understanding content?

Answer:
I never use such sites.

Question:
Are there any special sites you visit or enjoy that employ sign language?

Answer:
Sometimes; I enjoy searching and accessing "American Sign Language links" because they have thousands of different ASL links. I have found good information about ASL courses, video clips, animations, and articles on the Internet. It is wonderful for deaf or hearing people to have all this information for use in their research projects.

Question:
Would adding sign language be beneficial to you, on a web site?

Answer:
It would be very beneficial to me to have more sign language sites. With the growth of technology tools, use of sign language on the Internet will increase.

Question:
Have you encountered difficulties with Blackboard Classroom?

Answer:
No

Comments: My major is Deaf Education - American Sign Language Instruction with a minor in multimedia. I enjoy learning about the new technology and finding multimedia Web sites: iMovie, iDVD, caption closing on Apple Mac. I like to teach people about American Sign Language and I believe that technology can be an invaluable tool in strengthening the teaching and learning processes in the classroom.
