Let's consider for a moment the names of some of the most highly-trafficked blogs:
- Instapundit — He's a pundit. He posts "instant" responses to breaking news. A perfect title.
- Boing Boing — Sub-titled "A Directory of Wonderful Things," this blog bounces randomly from topic to topic.
- Eschaton — Greek for "end of the world, end of time, climax of history," this title is deliberately obscure, pedantic even.
- Wil Wheaton — There's no mistaking the author of WilWheaton.net. Name recognition doesn't hurt.
- Arts & Letters Daily — Yes, the Chronicle of Higher Education sponsors a daily weblog about, um, arts and letters. Sometimes the simplest solutions are also the best.
The name of your blog should reflect the purpose and tone of the site. It is your first opportunity to establish your online personality or ethos. For example, a blog whose purpose is to disseminate announcements and relevant links for an undergraduate course might benefit from a name as simple as Math 120 Blog, whereas a site devoted to your personal research or your personal life allows room for greater creativity.
