What's Legal in Copyright and Fair Use for Faculty?
launch moduleKaren I. Adsit
Professor and Director, Walker Teaching Resource CenterThis module hopes to provide UT faculty with information about how to apply copyright and fair use law to their particular situations in higher education as they teach classes, conduct research, and provide supplemental information to students using the web, Blackboard, etc. The module will address several laws including the following: Copyright Law of 1976, the Guidelines for Off- Air Broadcast Programming for Educational Purposes (1981), the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) (1998), the Copyright Term Extension Act (Bono Act) (1998), Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act (TEACH) (2002), UT intellectual property policy, and the Conference on Fair Use (CONFU) recommendations. Working in an office that provides faculty development opportunities about teaching, learning and technology, I see many faculty that are unaware of what fair use really means and how to apply the various laws to their teaching and research practice. This module will be primarily aimed at UT faculty (full time and part time) with students as a secondary audience.
