Best Practices for Successful Online Learning

Graduate AssistantThis module addresses professional development needs to prepare faculty members to design and implement successful online courses. Our module will guide instructors on how to successfully make the transition required to teach an online course so that students become empowered learners and take charge of the learning process. The self-paced online module will have several parts: The first part will provide a review and discussion of best practices and methods of instruction for online teaching and learning. The second part will provide instructions for setting up an online learning environment and the final section will provide a video library of the perspectives and experiences of current and former online faculty as well as students. The first goal is to have the faculty become familiar with different techniques used to deliver online material, which differs from the traditional classroom lecture. The next step will be to have the faculty become familiar with and comfortable in the online environment so they can deliver the material. We propose to do this in two different ways; the first is to setup general guidelines regarding the techniques, skills and features used in creating a successful online learning environment and secondly building a video library created from online faculty and students interviews will help provide valuable examples and insight into online teaching and learning.
