Online Versus Print (cont.)
The Right
Application for the Job
Choosing
the right application to achieve a task is critical to developing a
good document. In the next few pages we will briefly describe the kinds
of applications available
to developers and which of them should be used for which tasks.

Most applications
are designed with a particular purpose in mind. Microsoft Word for
example is a word processing application. It's primary purpose is
to allow the user to prepare words for presentation.
Many
applications give you the tools to do tasks that "stretch" the
capabilities of the application, often way too far. For example, you
have probably noticed that Microsoft Word will allow you to make diagrams
and draw pictures. But you may also have noticed that the resulting pictures
are not good quality and are often hard to edit or manipulate.
Using
Word to draw a picture is like using a screwdriver to dig a hole. The
drawing tools in a word processing program should be used only in a
limited fashion.
We
will be giving a brief overview of the following kinds of applications, what
kind of tasks these applications are designed to accomplish, and how
these applications can be misused.
