Assessing Linguistic Proficiency Online
launch moduleJeffrey E. Davis, Ph.D.

This module demonstrates how faculty and other related instructional personnel can use technology-based resources for student assessment and to provide feedback electronically. The focus is to provide faculty with an on-line means to assess the linguistic proficiency of interpreting students and education majors who are learning American Sign Language (ASL). Digital video technology and streaming is used to create mini language samples and proficiency evaluations. This module is a prototype for the use of digital video streaming to evaluate and provide feedback electronically to students. For example, these digital video clips can be used for lab activities and linked to related coursework offered through Online@UT. This technique for assessing linguistic proficiency and providing feedback electronically also has potential application to other disciplines outside the area of sign language interpreting and education of the deaf (such as English as a Second Language or Foreign Language Instruction).
