Funded by a 2004 ITC Teaching with Technology Grant, the Department of Computer Science collaborating with the School of Art developed five instructional modules for teaching some of the basics of computer science. At this time three of the modules are online and available for beta-testing with another two modules are expected to be online by the end of the fall semester 2005. The modules are available for viewing at http://www.cs.utk.edu/~cs100/modules_working/.

The department's goal with these modules is twofold: to provide additional instruction for the department's CS100 class, a class with a large enrollment and a high profile (the course satisfies the Quantitative Reasoning General Education requirement for all undergraduates and as an outreach tool to local high schools and community colleges. The modules are currently by used in CS100 laboratory sections.

Our goal now is to continue the momentum we've established with the development of these modules by synthesizing the feedback from our initial beta-test of module users in terms of content, usability and as a learning tool. We plan to contact the creators of similar computer science multimedia educational material in order to benefit from their experiences of what has worked and what has not worked. This combination of information would then be used to improve the modules accordingly and serve as a foundation for a literature review for an NSF grant.
